Onion Spring ‘Lilia’

Onion Spring ‘Lilia’ is a striking variety known for its vibrant red stems and mild flavour, making it a favourite in salads and garnishes. This unique spring onion adds both visual appeal and a subtle onion flavour to a wide range of dishes. It’s a fast-growing variety that thrives in UK gardens, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who want a reliable and attractive crop. With its crisp texture, ‘Lilia’ is perfect for fresh use or light cooking, adding a pop of colour to any meal.

Sowing ‘Lilia’ seeds is straightforward, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. Begin sowing directly into well-prepared soil from March to September. The seeds should be sown thinly in rows, and as they grow, thin the seedlings to ensure each plant has 2-3cm of space. This spacing allows for optimal growth and development. Plant in a sunny spot with well-drained soil to encourage healthy stems. Consistent watering is important, especially during dry periods, to maintain the mild flavour and crispness of the onions.

Harvesting can begin as early as May and continue through October, providing a long season of fresh onions. The best time to harvest is when the stems have reached about 15cm in length. Regular harvesting encourages continuous growth, ensuring a steady supply of these delicious onions throughout the growing season. For the best flavour, harvest in the morning when the plants are hydrated. ‘Lilia’ is easy to grow and care for, making it a great addition to any vegetable garden, whether youre growing for your own use or looking to impress with home-grown produce.
